Need an easy SEL activity for October?! 🎃

I can’t believe we are half way through October and I haven’t shared this “Kindness Trick-or-Treat”activity yet! This easy to prep activity has been an awesome way to incorporate SEL into my classroom this month.

Students have been “trick-or-treating” for positive messages by creating and exchanging kindness notes with each other. Each note encourages students to focus on appreciation, positive reinforcement, and spreading kindness throughout the classroom.

I’ve included 15 positive message starters to help students express meaningful compliments or encouraging words. There’s also a blank one for students to write what they want. 👻🎃✨

This week we welcomed a new *friend* into our classroom. Meet Ted! 💫

Last year, I did an entire blog post on how I create a calming classroom environment. So I can’t even begin to express my excitement to welcome Ted into our classroom this year.

Ted is a @breathingpalofficial and was created to combat stress and anxiety for kids (and even us adults 🙃).

Ted’s current spot in our classroom is in our back corner, where it’s easy to keep him safely charged. Ted is super light weight, making him easily portable. A few students put Ted to the test in the back and several other students took Ted to a comfy chair.

Easy to follow directions for Ted come on a card and are also on the bottom of him.

I’ve shared Ted (and his pals) with so many teachers already this week, I couldn’t wait to share him with you!

What calming strategies will you be using in your classroom this year? Share them below!👇🏼👇🏼

May has always been a CRAZY month.🤪

My freshmen and sophomores are busy preparing for (and then taking) their state exams, while I have the others practice their transition skills a little more - with resources like my Rental Process folder.

I’ve used this with my students for a few years now. It’s perfect for developing essential transition skills and something students can keep with them once they graduate.🎉

My phone just reminded me that I’ve been using IEP meeting sticky note reminders for NINE years!✨

It only seemed fitting to do a #throwback photo of the time I sent a reminder with a Diet Pepsi.🤪

These sticky notes are still F-R-E-E in my TPT shop! Just click the link in my bio.

I shared my top 3 strategies to get my high school special education students to write!📝✨
(link in bio)

Not only are these ways effective, but they are also incredibly easy to prep! Which lately - more than ever - little to no prep is what I NEED. 🫠😂

What are some strategies that work best for you?!

new month, new SEL activity 💚

This month I want students to recognize that genuine *luck* often finds its roots in the positive actions we take and the kindness we spread to others. Acts of kindness can be our very own *lucky charms.*☘️⭐️

Weekly Grade Checks ⭐️ Why I do them…

(Before I begin, I used a photo of a made up student grade check page - for confidentially.)

Over the years, I’ve really gotten in the habit of taking the time to check my students’ grades each week.

I know what you’re thinking. This can take quite a bit of time (especially with 30+ students on my caseload), but I’ve found that it really pays off for me and my students in the long run.

•Weekly grade checks allow me to provide personalized support to each student based on their specific needs and progress in a particular class.

•By checking grades weekly, I can quickly identify any issues or challenges a student may be facing and intervene early to address them.

•Regular grade checks help track students’ academic progress over time, allowing me to adjust instruction and support as needed.

•Weekly grade checks hold my students accountable for their academic performance and help them stay motivated to achieve their goals.

•I use the grade checks as a tool to communicate with parents/guardians and even principals about the student’s progress and collaborate on ways to support the student’s learning.

Do you do weekly grade checks? Tell me below…

During this month of February, we will be spreading love and empathy in my classroom.💖✨

I have always loved teaching SEL lessons through understanding and connection. My students will be putting my empathy prompts to use by creating Empathy Exchange Cards. 💌

I’ve shared all about this resoucre (that can be found in my TPT shop) at www.charleysclassroom.com ☺️

The end of 2019 is here! I’ve been seeing/reading a lot of “My Top 10 items of 2019” lists. I’m sure a lot of you have seen them, too.  Some lists I’ve read have been for the home, some lists have been for wardrobes,  and some have been for the classroom. I don’t know why […]

Over the past few years, I’ve gotten a lot of co-teaching questions e-mailed to me or direct messaged to me on Instagram. I always answer each question, and I love having conversations about co-teaching, but a lot of the questions (I started to notice) were the same. Not that this bothered me. I just realized […]

I have decided to turn this into a three part post, so I could focus on each area. With that being said… Welcome to Part […]

…did you read the title and cringe?! haha It’s ok if you did. I used to cringe my first few years of teaching when it came to sitting down and writing my lesson plans. I mean, as if stressing over writing IEPs, invitations, re-evaluations, behavior plans, student schedules, paraprofessional schedules, outside agency schedules, daily/weekly goal […]
